Supporting Gladstone
J. Serra Elementary School

During the 2005-2006 school year, Gladstone partnered with Junipero Serra Elementary School in Bernal Heights. J. Serra was the recipient of a 2005-2006 San Francisco Education Fund grant that is providing funding for fieldtrips to the Exploratorium.

Both scientific and administrative Gladstone staff members are accompanying students on these fieldtrips. Additionally, 35 students from J. Serra's After School Success Club have been exchanging pen pal letters with 35 Gladstone scientists.

In December 2005, pen pals met at J. Serra for an afternoon of fun activities together, and in March 2006, the pen pals came to Gladstone for a tour of the lab.

The pen pal program wrapped up with a final get together in May at J. Serra with games, activities, and dinner.

During March 2007, the 4th and 5th grade classes were able to return to the Exploratorium for a follow-up field trip, and Gladstone staff again chaperoned students as they learned about electricity and magnets.

Quote from one of the students:
Thank you for watching us. It was a pleasure to meet you. Me and Enrique had fun with you. I really enjoyed having you as a chaperone. Sincerely, Manny
