Course Objectives
Minifellowship Objectives

At the end of the course and during the demonstration clinic and case study discussion, participants will be able to:

1) Determine the role of hyperlipidemia and other known or emerging risk factors in coronary heart disease progression.

2) Describe the full range of hypolipidemic pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments available to optimize patient outcomes, considering long-term clinical trial and safety data.

3) Discuss recent findings in vascular pathophysiology, exploring the role of endothelial function and plaque stabilization in the development of coronary heart disease.

4) Develop treatment strategies to improve outcomes for high-risk patients such as diabetics and individuals with familial lipid disorders and for the under-treated patient such as women and elderly.

Update Objectives

After attending the Update, participants will be able to:

1) Select patients for lipid lowering therapy in the primary prevention setting and select patients for whom such therapy may be delayed.

2) Discuss the rationale for aggressive management of dyslipidemia in patients with clinically manifest syndromes due to atherosclerosis.

3) Describe newly developed concepts in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and dyslipidemia and better understand how vascular disease develops.

4) Discuss new and on-going clinical studies in the area of atherosclerosis and management of dyslipidemias.
