Salaries for postdoctoral fellows and research scientists
are based on national and local survey data and on 2008 NIH postdoctoral
salary guidelines. The salaries reflect a 5% housing allowance to
offset the high cost of living in the Bay Area. Percentages for
housing allowance and merit increase were used rather than flat
dollar amounts to allow the flexibility needed to respond to changing
conditions (e.g., variability of housing costs and future merit
increases).
§ Salaries are determined by years of relevant experience, based on satisfactory performance. (Those who are not performing satisfactorily would be assisted in exploring other career development opportunities.) One year of additional experience is given for each year of medical residency and relevant postdoctoral fellowship experience, up to a maximum of 5 years; for physicians, this credit is awarded only if the M.D. degree was obtained from an accredited medical school (as defined by the California Board of Medicine).
‡
Starting postdoctoral fellows receive a one-time relocation/personal
setup allowance of $1,500 as a lump sum in first pay period. The
0-1 year level includes the $1,500. (i.e. 0-1 base salary is $42,400
plus $1,500 = $43,900.)
