Joan Bruland, JD

Joan Bruland is the Director of Intellectual Property, and Intellectual Property Counsel at the Gladstone Institutes. Ms. Bruland is responsible for all aspects of Gladstone’s intellectual property, including technology licensing and research-related agreements. She joined Gladstone in 1997 and has more than 25 years of experience in intellectual property law—having worked in private practice, the medical-device industry and technology transfer for academia. She is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, State of Minnesota, the Federal District Court of Minnesota, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and as Registered In-House Counsel in the State of California. Ms. Bruland is a registered U. S. Patent Attorney who earned a bachelor’s degree in medical microbiology at the University of Minnesota and a JD from the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minn.
Stephen Freedman, PhD

Dr. Stephen B. Freedman is Director of the Gladstone Center for Translational Research (GCTR) and Vice President for Corporate Liaison and Ventures at the Gladstone Institutes. Through Dr. Freedman’s leadership, GCTR has facilitated a number of significant strategic relationships and alliances—across all of Gladstone’s research areas—with biotech and pharmaceutical companies, venture capital firms and foundations. GCTR is always looking for new opportunities to advance Gladstone’s research through both traditional and non-traditional collaboration models. Dr. Freedman has more than 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including senior positions at Merck & Co. and Elan Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Freedman earned a bachelor’s degree in physiology and biochemistry and a PhD in pharmacology from the University of Southampton. He received the G. Kerkut Prize for Physiology in 1978 and completed postdoctoral studies with Professor Richard Miller at the University of Chicago.
Vincent E. Moseley is the Vice President for Finance at the Gladstone Institutes. He is also Secretary of the Gladstone Foundation, and Treasurer and Secretary of GRE, LLC, a Gladstone-controlled real-estate investment trust. Mr. Moseley has more than 18 years of management experience, with specialties in accounting, finance and operations. He has worked and consulted in multiple industries, including healthcare, professional services, private equity, publishing and manufacturing. Mr. Moseley received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Michael L. Penn, Jr., MD, PhD

Dr. Michael L. Penn, Jr., is the Vice President for Strategy at the Gladstone Institutes. Dr. Penn oversees the Communications and Development Departments, manages the core laboratories and provides leadership for the conception, analysis and implementation of Gladstone's strategic initiatives. Prior to joining Gladstone in 2012 he worked for more than 8 years at Genentech Inc., where he helped advance innovations in drug development. In 2001, Dr. Penn co-founded Building Diversity in Science, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underrepresented minority students to pursue careers in science. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Commissioner for San Francisco's Health Commission, the policy-making board of the Department of Public Health. Dr. Penn earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Morehouse College and an MD and PhD in biomedical sciences from the University of California, San Francisco.
Bruce Spaulding is the Executive Director of the newly formed Gladstone Foundation. Mr. Spaulding joined Gladstone at the end of 2009 after 22 years as Senior Vice Chancellor at the University of California, San Francisco. Mr. Spaulding earned a bachelor’s degree with honors from Northeastern University, a masters in urban affairs from the University of New Hampshire, and a masters of public administration (MPA) from the University of Nevada. He also holds full certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
John Whiting

John Whiting is the Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer at the Gladstone Institutes. He has primary responsibility for accounting, information technology, purchasing and enterprise business systems. Before joining Gladstone in 2010, Mr. Whiting was at Genentech Inc. for more than 20 years, most recently as Deputy Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Genentech, Mr. Whiting worked at Arthur Young for eight years as an auditor. Mr. Whiting received both a bachelor's degree in molecular biology and an MBA from the University of Oregon.
