Lipid Disorders Training Center
Now in its 11th year, the Lipid Disorders Training Center is regularly oversubscribed within weeks after publication of the course schedule. In 2000, 116 physicians, nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists attended the two-and-one-half day basic courses, and 76 attended one of the semiannual updates. The basic course provides an intensive educational experience to healthcare providers who wish to become experts in managing dyslipidemic patients. Lectures provide in-depth information about the pathophysiology of common dyslipidemias and atherosclerosis, the clinical science on which treatment guidelines are based, how to evaluate established and novel risk factors, the pharmacology of drugs used to manage dyslipidemia and other risk factors, and dietary management. One day is devoted to a demonstration clinic in which Gladstone Lipid Clinic patients are seen by course attendees. Understanding how these patients have been managed is one of the most useful aspects of the basic course. The update courses are valued because several new topics are covered during each update, including the results and implications of recently completed clinical trials, recent developments in our understanding of the pathophysiology of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis, and new drugs and dietary issues. The Lipid Disorders Training Center program is also conducted in Turkey, where basic courses have been offered for over five years. During 2000, update courses were also offered. Over 2,000 primary care physicians, cardiologists, endocrinologists, resident physicians, and medical students have participated in these courses.
