Education
The Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease (GIND) provides a highly interactive academic environment and state-of-the-art research facilities that are ideal for training in neuroscience and biomedical research. GIND investigators also collaborate closely with colleagues at UCSF, UC Berkeley and Stanford further broadening the exposure of our trainees to cutting-edge technologies and scientific concepts.

Postdoctoral Fellows
Our Office of Postdoctoral and Graduate Affairs offers opportunities for multidisciplinary training in diverse areas of basic and disease-related neuroscience (see Areas of Investigation and Investigators). It combines rigorous scientific education and hands-on research experience with a strong emphasis on mentoring and career development (Mentoring Standards).

Ph.D. and Undergraduate Students
GIND investigators have joint faculty appointments in different UCSF departments and graduate programs, such as the Neuroscience Program, which is a component of the Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS), the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Program, the Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics (PSPG) Program, and the Medical Scientist Training Program(MSTP). Undergraduate students from different programs at UC Berkeley have also benefited from training in GIND laboratories.

Medical Students and Resident Physicians
Some of our physician-scientists participate actively in the training of medical students and neurology residents through UCSF’s Department of Neurology, Memory and Aging Center and San Francisco General Hospital.

High School Students
We are eager to share our fascination for the nervous system with promising young students who might harbor the potential to shed light on neural functions or to develop cures for major neurological diseases. Therefore, several GIND laboratories participate in UCSF’s High School Student Summer Internship Program. We strongly encourage applications to this and related programs.

General Public
Several GIND investigators also participate in public lecture series aimed at educating lay people about research advances in our fields of study. Most of these lectures have focused on the causes of neurodegenerative diseases and on emerging treatments that give rise to justifiable hope among patients and those providing for their care.

Seminars
The Gladstone-UCSF community offers a large number of lectures, seminars and journal clubs, featuring local experts as well as outstanding scientists from around the world. The GIND Seminar series provides a stimulating and highly interactive forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative research in basic and disease-related neuroscience.
