Community Outreach
Translation of knowledge gained from basic research into education, prevention, and treatment programs is an important aspect of our mission. The Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease (GIND) is actively engaged in efforts to translate scientific discoveries into better treatments for major diseases of the nervous system. We also participate regularly in fund-raising efforts of charitable organizations and in educating the public on neurodegenerative disorders and neuroscientific research in general. Through such contributions, we demonstrate our commitment to the community as well as to the pursuit of our scientific goals. The following examples highlight some of these activities.

The GIND collaborates closely with UCSF’s Memory and Aging Center to ensure that advances in neurodegenerative disease research are promptly but cautiously translated into better clinical care of patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions.

Members of the GIND regularly participate in the Memory Walk, an annual walk-a-thon organized by the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness and funds for the Association’s efforts to help Alzheimer patients and their families. See highlights of Gladstone's participation in the latest Memory Walk.

Several GIND laboratories participate in the Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP), a collaboration between UCSF and the San Francisco Unified School District promoting partnership between scientists and educators in support of high quality science education for high school students.
