UCSF AIDS Research Institute

The UCSF AIDS Research Institute (ARI) coordinates the activities of the more than 350 scientists and physicians at UCSF who participate in basic, clinical, or behavioral HIV research. ARI will identify emerging scientific priorities and foster their development, identify infrastructure needs, raise external funds to stimulate multidisciplinary, cutting-edge research, facilitate communication among UCSF scientists, and disseminate findings rapidly to people infected with the virus in the community.

The Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology (GIVI) plays a significant role in ARI. GIVI Director Dr. Warner Greene serves as a member of ARI’s executive committee. Working with former ARI Director Dr. Thomas Coates, he formed the Gladstone-UCSF Laboratory of Clinical Virology to meet the needs of clinical HIV researchers throughout UCSF. Directed by Gladstone investigator Dr. Robert Grant, this laboratory continues to provide state-of-the-art technologies to assist clinicians in their studies. The AIDS Research Institute is now guided by the leadership of Dr. John Greenspan, Leland A. and Gladys K. Barber Professor and Dean for Research, School of Dentistry; Professor of Oral Biology and Oral Pathology, School of Dentistry; and Professor of Pathology, School of Medicine.
