WHY GLADSTONE? HOW IS GLADSTONE DIFFERENT?

 We have a clear focus on disease

At Gladstone, our central mission is to accelerate scientific discovery and medical innovation for the benefit of patients suffering from cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease and viral infections. We envision a world in which heart disease and related disorders have been tamed, a time when dementia is no longer a common aspect of aging, and a future where outbreaks of deadly viruses are quickly contained.

 We have many of the top researchers

We have attracted many of the leading researchers in their fields. They receive competitive grants from the NIH at twice the national average. Their findings are published in the top biomedical journals. Their research findings are recognized with prestigious awards. Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, received the Kyoto Prize, the Wolf Prize, and the Lasker Award for his work in stem cells. Lennart Mucke, MD, won the Potemkin Prize for his work in Alzheimer's disease. Warner Greene, MD, PhD, was asked to join the Global Virus Network, which includes the world's top virologists.

 We have an entrepreneurial spirit

Gladstone has the critical mass of brilliant scientists, state-of-the-art instrumentation, and key collaborations to undertake studies into diseases that affect most of the people on earth. At the same time, Gladstone is small enough to be nimble to take advantage of new findings. We have recruited the very best investigators who bring new capabilities to fill specific roles in multiple research projects. We continue to add the latest technologies and equipment to enable those researchers to proceed more efficiently and rapidly.

WHAT WE PROMISE YOU

 Focus

Our focus is on specific major health problems. Heart disease remains the number 1 killer in the United States and the developed world. Over 33 million people in the world are infected by HIV, and two—thirds of them live in sub–Saharan Africa. As populations around the world age, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases is rising rapidly. Gladstone has targeted these vexing diseases because they are extremely difficult to solve—but also extremely important.

 Transparency

Your donation to Gladstone travels straight to its intended destination. There are no detours, and you can track your gift from the day you make it. We encourage you to visit our website regularly to monitor our progress. We invite you to attend our public lectures to hear the latest advances. If you would like, please add your name to our email newsletter list so that we can keep you up to date with research findings.

 Leverage

A gift to Gladstone makes you a seed investor. Trailblazing research is considered “too risky” by most grant review panels, and so, private donations are critical to new innovations. Using that “seed money,” our investigators can develop an idea to the point where they have demonstrated its feasibility to those more traditional granting agencies. Thus, your gift has the potential to yield 10 times your initial gift when the findings it pays for attract additional government funding.

As one example, Gladstone neuroscientist Steven Finkbeiner invented an automated microscope that collects data on many thousands of individual cells over a period of days and enables the use of sophisticated statistical programs. The microscope was developed entirely with private funding. The resulting first paper changed thinking about Huntington's disease and became the most cited paper in neuroscience over the course of two years.
