President's Greeting

Robert W. MahleyWelcome!
Now celebrating its 28th year, the J. David Gladstone Institutes has a long and rich record of basic research achievements in such areas as cardiovascular disease, immunology, virology and neurological disease.

At this site, you’ll learn about Gladstone's three institutes, each devoted to a different important area of medical research, as well as our history and our new administrative center and laboratory adjacent to the University of California, San Francisco, Mission Bay campus.

Gladstone is an independent, nonprofit organization affiliated with UC San Francisco. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of all people by helping to contain and combat some of the most devastating illnesses of our time, including cardiovascular disease, HIV and Alzheimer's disease. Our focus is on basic research, with an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms behind these maladies. Our vision is a time when a much lower percentage of the population will be afflicted with such illnesses, with a concomitant reduction in the costs, both social and financial, associated with them.

Our success in obtaining grants from the National Institutes of Health has been well above the national average over the years. We're gratified by this track record in obtaining competitive external support because it represents recognition of Gladstone's excellence in research by the larger scientific community.

The great achievements of Gladstone have been the result of the dedication, imagination, and hard work of our scientific and administrative staffs. I thank them all and invite you to join us in our mission to contribute to the health and well-being of all humankind.

Robert W. Mahley, MD, PhD
