| Gladstone's mission to improve the health and well-being of all people extends beyond the laboratory and into the community. While our educational programs train current and future healthcare providers, our community outreach programs aim to provide up-to-date information to empower people so that they can make informed choices about their own health.
Beyond the activities outlined below, many educational outreach programs are coordinated by the Gladstone Diversity Leadership Team . A subcommittee of the Diversity Leadership Team is the Student Outreach Committee that is dedicated to promoting science education and scientific careers for students and minorities in our community schools by connecting educators and students with scientists and resources at Gladstone, the committee coordinates a high school-level healthcare module for the annual National Student Leadership Conference, leads elementary school tours to science museums and has created a scientist pen-pal program for local youngsters.

The United Nations estimates that in 2007 the total number of people living with HIV totaled 33 million, there were 2.5 million new infections, and 2.1 million people were killed by the epidemic. The UN also estimates that in Asia, AIDS may soon emerge as the single largest cause of death in the age group 15-42. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the most affected region in the global AIDS epidemic. Although just over 10% of the world's population live in this region, 68% of adults and nearly 90% of children infected with HIV live here (22.5 million people living with the virus). The epidemic impacts children particularly and there are an estimated 11.4 million orphans due to AIDS. The current generation of combination antiviral therapies is expensive and complex to administer, making it unlikely that these drugs will curtail the epidemic in developing areas. An effective vaccine and new therapies are urgently needed. Scientists at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology are dedicated to both of these goals.

Education in basic and disease-oriented neurosciences is an important mission of the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease. Investigators promote this mission through various educational and scientific initiatives. They also participate actively in fund-raising efforts for the Alzheimer’s Association. Through such contributions, we demonstrate our commitment to the community as well as to the pursuit of our scientific goals.
