Gladstone Research
Research at Gladstone focuses on three of the most important medical problems of modern times. Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly one million Americans every year. HIV afflicts upwards of 40 million people around the world. Neurodegenerative diseases are increasing dramatically as our population ages.

Through basic biomedical research and education, we seek to improve the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and cure of these diseases. Seminal discoveries by Gladstone scientists have contributed to a better understanding of these diseases.

Funding for our research comes from a variety of sources: the Gladstone endowment, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and other granting agencies and sources.

Endowment The Gladstone endowment, currently at about $200 million, is a critical part of our success. Funds from the endowment underwirte high-risk, high payoff studies that are not likely to be supported by the traditional extramural granting system. Endowment income provides the resources to generate preliminary results which are essential for obtaining grants from other organizations.

Grants Gladstone recieves a significant amount of its financial support from NIH and other federal agencies. Currently, we have 106 active grants, generating approximately $29 million from the NIH in 2007. Gladstone has a higher than average success rate of obtaining federal grants; though competition is increasing while funding is shrinking. Most recently, we've been a leading institution in receiving CIRM grants, both for training researchers in stem cell work and for doing research on stem cells in each of our disease areas.

Power of Partnership
In late 2004, Gladstone moved to its new research facility adjacent to UCSF's Mission Bay campus. With all three institutes together, our scientific environment and research capabilities are greatly enhanced. Mission Bay is one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the country and will eventually house a mixture of biomedical research from Gladstone, other private research institutes, UCSF, and for-profit biomedical companies. This mixture and focus on biomedical research promises to become one of the leading centers for biomedical research. The J. David Gladstone Institutes is now located in the heart of this development.

However, this important expansion has increased our need for external support beyond that provided by government and private granting agencies and internal Gladstone resources.

We seek to involve the community as ongoing partners in our mission to conquer these diseases. And every dollar brings us closer to our ultimate goal of improving the health and well being of all people.

Making a Difference
Your support can make a difference. We invite you to become a partner with Gladstone in our mission to make a difference.

The Gladstone Opportunity Campaign: How You Can Help
The Gladstone Opportunity Campaign was created in 2000 to ensure consistent, continous support for all of our activities. The Gladstone Advisory Council, which has lead the campaign to raise $35 million in 3–5 years, is comprised of 32 eminent Bay Area business and scientific leaders. In a relatively short-time, we have raised support for expansion of our stem cell facilities, the recruitment of new investigators and the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment. You can make a contribution to help move our research forward and move us closer to finding treatment for some of the most important medical problems of our times.
