Lipid Clinic
|
The Lipid Clinic, which began as a resource for the Cardiovascular Institute's research program, has become a teaching program recognized for its excellence throughout the UCSF Medical School. In this model of physician- and dietitian-directed patient care, learning opportunities are provided by including patients with a variety of well-documented lipid disorders as well as medically under-served patients. Patients are referred to the clinic by physician's within the San Francisco County health care system. Private physicians familiar with the work at Gladstone Institutes also refer patients to the Clinic.
The Lipid Clinic accommodates all the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) internal medicine primary care trainees and endocrine fellows in addition to the usual complement of medical, pharmacy and nursing students. Cost-effective evaluation and management of a number of issues including diet, weight control and medications affecting blood lipid levels are the focus of the core curriculum. Weekly lectures prior to each clinic, including reviews of pertinent new medical literature, serve to enhance the practical aspects of the curriculum.
Clinic staff members are recognized locally within the University and nationally for their teaching and patient care efforts. The staff participates in the Institute's Lipid Disorders Training Center program, and members lecture frequently to medical personnel interested in lipid management issues. Various staff members have also written a number of textbook chapters about the management of dyslipidemia.
