Benefits
Gladstone offers a comprehensive set of benefits, which is outlined
in the summary of benefits section. |
Compensation
Salaries for postdoctoral fellows and research scientists are based
on national and local survey data. Click
here to view the 2007-2008 salary scale for potdoctoral fellows. |
|
Gladstone Extension Program
The Gladstone Extension Program provides additional courses relevant
to postdoctoral fellows, including informatics, Excel biostatistics,
grant writing, interviewing skills, and manuscript preparation. |
Gladstone Scholars Program
The plan creates a Gladstone Scholars Program, allowing postdoctoral
fellows to accept the added benefits associated with winning prestigious
and competitive fellowships (e.g., Howard Hughes Medical Institute,
Pfizer, Damon-Runyon). In addition, a new position recognizing the career
development step for K01 or K08 recipients is under active development.
|
|
Housing Allowance
The plan includes a housing allowance of 5% of salary. |
Mentoring
Mentoring is a hallmark of the Gladstone postdoctoral program. The full
development of postdoctoral fellows depends on an excellent mentoring
program to provide role models for scientists just establishing their
careers and to solve problems in the laboratory. Mentoring
Standards have been developed and distributed to all investigators,
postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. Each of us has a part in
this important effort.
Principal Investigators
Mentoring is now a specific item for discussion during the annual performance
reviews, both between trainees and principal investigators and between
Directors and principal investigators. Mentors will receive feedback
about their performance in meeting the mentoring standards. Principal
investigators will receive additional training in mentoring through
management development seminars, talks by outside investigators who
are particularly successful mentors, and distribution of pertinent literature.
This training will focus on issues identified as needing particular
attention.
Postdoctoral Fellows
We also want to make postdoctoral fellows more aware of procedures that
exist for addressing problems between postdoctoral fellows and mentors.
We encourage fellows to approach their mentor directly. However, if
further action is required, fellows can seek resolution from the Institute’s
Director, the postdoctoral
fellows advisor in the Human Resources Department, or the President.
The Directors and the Human Resources Department will consider an external
consultant if the conflicts remain unresolved. Training in conflict
resolution (for mentors and trainees) will be incorporated into the
in-house training program (Gladstone Extension).
The Institutes
Gladstone is creating a mentoring network that extends beyond the individual
laboratories. For example, a “Women in Science” seminar series gives
female fellows an opportunity to interact with successful women scientists.
The Committee
on Advancement of Women Scientists at Gladstone, in conjunction
with the President, Directors and Human Resources Department, continually
evaluates and recommends changes and develop new programs to advance
women scientists in the Institutes. |
Moving
Assistance
A lump sum payment of $1,500 is given to all new postdoctoral fellows
to help defray the costs of moving and setting up a household in the
Bay Area. |
Postdoctral
Advisor
John
LeViathan, Human Resources Manager for the Gladstone Institutes, also
serves as the postdoctoral advisor. He is the primary contact for
postdoctoral fellows for employee relations, conflict resolution issues,
and career development and counseling.
You
can e-mail John LeViathan at jleviathan@gladstone.ucsf.edu.

Postdoctoral
Fellows Handbook
A
handbook has been made available to provide comprehensive information
for postdoctoral fellows.
|
Promotion
Opportunities
The new plan provides for the possibility of promotion to research
scientist after 3 years. Promotion is based solely on merit and scientific
achievement. Promotion to research scientist includes a salary increase
above the typical postdoctoral fellow level and participation in the
Gladstone retirement program. All Gladstone years will count toward
vesting, resulting in 60% vesting if promoted at the 3-year mark.
|
UCSF
The Directors have embraced the concept of emphasizing interactions
with the University of California San Francisco as a fundamental priority
and will at all stages of Gladstone/UCSF interactions facilitate such
relationships, including those activities involving postdoctoral fellows.
|
Women
Scientists
The Committee on Advancement of Women Scientists at Gladstone was
established by the President and Directors of the Institutes to review
attitudes and practices toward female scientists and to develop ways
to promote women at Gladstone.
