October 28, 2004 -- Gladstone's Warner C. Greene Named 2004 AAAS Fellow

Warner C. Greene, director of the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology in San Francisco, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers.

Greeneís research focuses on studies of the molecular basis for HIV and HTLV-I retroviral pathogenesis. As part of the AAAS Medical Sciences section, Greene, a professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology at the University of California, San Francisco, has been elected as a Fellow for his fundamental studies to unravel the mechanisms of T-cell activation via the normal immune response or viral infection.

Under Greeneís direction, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology has established an international reputation for excellence in the study of HIV and AIDS. He also serves as co-director of the federally funded UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research (CFAR).

After completing a B.A. with greatest distinction at Stanford University in 1971, Greene began his medical and research training at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he received his M.D. and Ph.D. in 1977. The author of more than 280 scientific papers, heís received outstanding investigator awards from the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American College of Rheumatology and has been recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information as one of the 100 most-cited scientists in the world.

Awarded to 308 members this year, AAAS Fellow rank is granted for efforts to advance science or its applications deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. This yearís AAAS Fellows will be announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on October 29. New Fellows will be presented with official certificates and pins on Saturday, February 19, at the Fellows Forum during the 2005 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association's 24 sections or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution), or by the Chief Executive Officer.

The Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology is one of three research institutes of The J. David Gladstone Institutes, an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution affiliated with UCSF. For further information, visit www.gladstone.ucsf.edu.
