Stem Cell Research at Gladstone
Stem cells have the potential to be a “Swiss army knife” of tools to eradicate disease. And in our mission to do high-risk, high-reward research into cardiovascular and neurological disease and HIV, the Gladstone Institutes has been at the forefront of working with stem cells as one critical path into treating these devastating diseases.

Early on we began several collaborations with UCSF and as a private organization, we were able to fund research into new human cell lines that were not approved for research under federal law.

When the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) began granting public money to advance stem cell research, Gladstone became one of the first recipients of $2.4 million in training grants.

Our early work in stem cells focused on cardiogenesis. But with the first CIRM seed grants awarded, we will now be able to expand our work in the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease into mental disorders and age-dependent neurological disease such as autism. In addition, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology will study the potential protective role of APOBEC3G in inhibiting the action of retroelments or ‘jumping genes’ within the genome of human stem cells. APOBEC3G has been shown to have potential anti-HIV effects.
