Training in Regenerative Medicine at Gladstone
“Our training grant application to CIRM received the top score of all the programs in California and that is a real tribute to the quality of the Gladstone CIRM scholars”
Bruce Conklin, MD, Associate director Gladstone CIRM Scholar Program
Gladstone has an aggressive training program in regenerative medicine and stem cell biology. Nearly two-thirds of the 24 laboratories at Gladstone are engaged in some aspect of stem cell research. The Gladstone CIRM Scholars program is the centerpiece of all our stem cell research efforts. The program trains 10 biomedical scientists each year: seven postdoctoral and three clinical scholars.
Gladstone is a major recipient of CIRM funding: two New Faculty grants, three SEED grants, one Comprehensive grant, a Shared Stem Cell Facility grant, two Cell Line grants, and one Disease Team planning grant. Gladstone has a total of 11 CIRM grants, ranking 8th in the state, ahead of several universities and larger research institutes.
Gladstone offers a unique training environment for CIRM Scholars, characterized by a commitment to educating the next generation of biomedical scientists, highly interactive research groups, and substantial individual feedback from experienced mentors. Mentoring is a hallmark of the Gladstone postdoctoral program. This emphasis results from the commitment of an exemplary group of investigators who are dedicated to training young scientists.
The primary goal of the program is to conduct research on regenerative medicine to develop new therapies for the treatment of disease. Training is provided to scholars from a variety of scientific backgrounds, including relevant fields of biology, clinical training programs, and bioengineering.
