The primary mission of the J. David Gladstone Institutes is to conduct basic research on three of the most important medical problems of modern times. Cardiovascular disease, AIDS, and neurodegenerative disorders place astonishing financial and emotion burdens on the victims, their families and communities, and societies worldwide.

  As our population ages, the incidence of these diseases will rise, and the cost will threaten our entire health care system. Major medical advances are urgently needed to stem the rising tide of obesity and heart disease, to stop AIDS from devastating entire generations in Africa and other developing areas of the world, and to prevent Alzheimer's disease‚ and other dementias from robbing society of its resources‚ including the wisdom of our elders. Realization of the impact of these illnesses gives Gladstone scientists a sense of purpose and urgency. Research is our best hope in combating these threats to our long-term health and quality of life.
